The Club

This section of the site will give you a brief overview of the club's history,  who's who? in the club and when, where and the times the club trains plus the cost to train at the club

A brief history of the club

The club was formed in 1987 when the Newburn Leisure Centre first opened its doors to the public. The Queen Mother attended an official opening ceremony and the club began with a handful of young novices who provided a display for her and the other dignitaries who were in attendance. Looking back this must have been terrifying for those young children as they had only been doing judo for three months.

Neil Adams, World Champion and a very high profile judo player came to Newburn to officially open the club as Newburn Judo Club.

Other Olympians have also attended the club over the years, providing coaching seminars and training days through the Olympic workshop programme and club invitations.

The club was the mission of Joe Laws and Ian Smythe who along with the students, parents and their families propelled the club forwards in its development.

The club has been very fortunate to have had Chloe Cowen (O'Gorman) as a coach for the last three years. Chloe was Junior World Bronze, 5 times European Medallist, British Open Champion, Commonwealth Champion and competed in the Sydney Olympics.

The club has produced many junior natonal medallists (See awards and Events page) and is currently the BJA's Centre of excellence fo the Northern Area
