Club News 2010

Dumfries Scottish open, Dumfries, Scotland (24th July) – the club took to the high road with a squad of 15 and returned with 18 medals. The club took 12 gold’s, 5 silvers and a bronze. The gold’s were taken by: Courtney, Katie Purvis, Jessica Phillips, Megan Douglas (x2), Jasmyne, George, Dillon, Lee, Darren (x2) and Steve Welsh.  The silvers were taken by: Stephanie, Megan, Connor, Michael Douglas and Michael W with Daniel taking the bronze. Many thanks to the event organisers for their efforts on the day and their hospitality.

Northumbria University Partnership, 1st July – The club has the greatest of pleasure in announcing that it has become a partner with Northumbria University to deliver and develop judo within the University. The club will be supplying coaches and delivering regular sessions over the academic year. The partnership will begin this September with taster sessions in the freshers week leading on to a three session per week for various abilities from recreational to advanced players. The club will also be involved with the development of a student committee to empower the students to help develop the club and judo within the University.

Kent International, Crystal Palace, London 26th/27thJune – The club attended this high quality event on a hot weekend (which became a bit of a sauna due to the swimming pool being in the building) with judoka from all over Europe and came back with a gold, silver and two bronzes plus 4 fifth places. Congratulation goes to Courtney on her gold, Dillon  on his silver, Lee and Jordan on their bronze medals and to Holly, Connor, Daniel  and Michael on their fifth places.  A special mention goes to Dillon Shoulder on his silver who was in a category of 64 and only just lost out on the gold. Excellent effort mate! Keep up the good work

Club grading, 19th June – A large number of members took part in a club grading with plenty of parents in support while their children were put thorough their paces. Well done to all the members on their new grades.

Goole senior and Youth, 13th June – The club travelled down the road to this event on returned with three gold’s and two silvers. Congratulations go to Tom, Lee and Emma on taking gold while Stephen and Emma (again) took silver. Well-done guys.

Club Show, Newburn, (12th June) – The club ran its annual club show with sixty novices and beginners taking part in a festival of judo. The aim of the show is to give the newer members of the club the opportunity to take part in a supportive event and give them and their families an introduction to competitive judo. The member’s parents and families all give excellent support while the kids performed really well with them all receiving medals. Special mentions go to young Kieran Henderson, who took on some refereeing responsibilities with great confidence, Holly Laws and Jordan Beck for running the tables and Tom Simpson and Arran Hunter who are now black belts in belt tying!! Big thanks to all the other volunteers and to all the members who took part in the event who made the event so successful
Ashington Mini-Mons, Ashington (22nd May) – The club sent a small team of 13 young ones and all returned with medals to their credit. The club took 5 gold’s, 4 silvers and 4 bronze medals. The gold medallists were: Sophie Pringle, Abira Jamal, Brendan Miller, Aiden Lowry and Daniel Wilson. The silvers were taken by: Lauren Driver, Katie Purvis, Ben Chandler and Joe Mumford while Luke Mumford, James Alderdice, Alex Fanshawe and Luke Gizma took the bronze medals. Well done to all those that took part in the event and a big thank you to Wayne and Ashington Judo Club for putting on the event

Highland Open, Fort William, Scotland(15th/16th May) – The club headed into the beautiful scenery of Scotland for this very good event and returned with 11 gold’s, 6 silvers and 4 bronze medals and a new Black belt to boot. The event was run over two days, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all those that attended. The gold medals were taken by:  Courtney, Stephanie, Jasmyne, Connor, Dillon, Daniel, Craig, Michael, John and Emma who took two gold’s. The silver medallists were: Stephanie (X two) Darren, (X two), Jordan and Emma with bronze being taken by Brendan, James, Holly and Jade. A big well done to the latest member to gain a black belt. Emma Langton gained the required number of points to gain her black belt with a fine performance over the weekend winning eight fights in total. Well-done Emma, from everyone in the club.   

Durham Open U18, Spennymoor (2nd May) The club travelled down the road to this local event with a small team of 16 and returned with a very respectable 15 medals. The members took 11 gold’s, a silver and three bronze podium places. The gold medallists were: Courtney, Stephanie, Holly T, Callum Keane, Connor, Daniel, Adil, Jack, Dillon and Steven Telfer took two gold’s. Young Ben Chandler took the sliver while Kieran, Adil and Jack added to the medal haul with the bronze medals. Well done to all that took part and congratulations on some excellent all round judo.

Madeira Training Camp, Funchal, Portugal (22nd Apr - 29th Apr) – The club took part in a training week plus two events and cultural exchange with a club from the island of Madeira. A party of thirteen members travelled to the island of Madeira to meet up with our friends from Clube Navel Do Funchal Judo Club. Over the week they took in the sights of the island (Especially the beach!) and partook of four technical and randori sessions, as well as two competitive events. The week was a fantastic experience for the coaches and the players who attended all made new friends and took part in some fantastic judo training. Newburn Coaches were really impressed with the set up of Funchal club and the quality and standard of the judo at all levels. Newburn Coaches took some of the sessions, which was a great experience in the exchange of new ideas and also attended a special needs school where they worked with a range of young people with disabilities. The members gained some excellent results in the first event (A Madeiran ranking event) with a total of 4 gold’s, 4 silvers and a bronze. Gold medallists were as follows: Holly L, Emma Langton, (Her first for the club) Steve Welsh and Lee. The silvers were: Ben Irving, Patrick Tucker, Nico and Jordan with Stacey taking the bronze. The members then took part in an event organised by Funchal Judo Club. Again they were successful in taking 7 gold’s, 3 silvers and a bronze: Gold medallists were as follows: Holly, Steve Welsh, Steven Telfer, Michael Wilkinson, Darren May, Lee and Jordan. The silvers were taken by: Emma, Patrick and Nico with Stacey taking the bronze. The club and those members that attended would like to thank whole heartily the members of Funchal Judo club for their generosity, hospitality and friendship that was giving over the week which has lead to some long lasting friendships being made. Funchal Judo Club and Newburn Judo Club training week 2010

North of England Open, Richard Dunn Centre, Bradford (28th Mar) - On the road again for some of the members- this time to sunny Yorkshire. Twelve of the members attended this event and returned with 4 gold’s, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals. The gold medallists were: Courtney, Stephanie, Adil and Stephen, The silver medallists were: Connor and Dillon while Alex, Holly T, Jack and Daniel took the bronze medals; A quick mention to George Gray who was really unlucky to win 4 fights and return empty handed for his sterling efforts. Neil Adams Classic, Meadowbank, Edinburgh, (27th Mar) – The club attended this well attended event with a large group of older and newer members and returned with an impressive total of 17 gold’s, 10 silver and 12 bronze podium places. The event was the first one for twenty members whom have come through the Premier League for Sport programme and they did extremely well for their first event returning with 6 gold’s, six silvers and 8 bronze medals. (See PL4S page for a more detailed report) The gold medallists were: Libby Arkless, Katie Purvis, Brandon Jarvis, Courtney Shoulder, Stephanie Rodden, Holly Telfer, Daniel Laws, Dillon Shoulder, James Alderdice, Michael Wilkinson, Jasmyne Wilkinson, Sophie Pringle, Michaela Curtis, Abira Jamal, (Also voted performer of the day) Adain Lowery, Toby Harris and Aston Davidson. The silver medallists were: Brendan Miller, Ben Chandler, Molly Seymour, Katy Seymour, Caitlin Lowes, Charlene Maningding, Phillip Cox, Cameron McKiness, Michael Waddle and Michael Dixon. The bronze medallists were: Luke Mumford, James Arkless, Jade Hamilton, Bobby Lowes, Rachel Wansel, Natalie Szutenburg, Scienna Pinnion, Lauren Pollen, Ryan Burke, Tony Foggo and Luke Gizma. A special mention to Steve Welsh, Lee Storey, Stephen Telfer and Darren May who had to miss their fights due to the bus having to leave – we are sure you would have done well. A huge well done to all from everyone in the club and a big thank you to the parents that travelled to support the members.

British Schools National Championships, EIS, Sheffield (20th Mar) The club had eleven members representing the club and their schools at this very good event. The event was very well attended with 300 entries and a waiting list to boot. The members returned with a very respectable total of a gold,  two silvers and six bronze medals. Molly Seymour took the gold while Connor Eaton and Stephanie Rodden took the silvers. The bronze medallists were as follows:  Caitlin McEwan, James Arkless, Keiron Henderson, Daniel Laws, Dillon Shoulder and Rhys Ash. Unfortunately, Jack Curry and Michael Wilkinson just missed out despite winning fights. A special mention to Michael, who got to the semi final of the U73kgs only to lose out on the bronze despite being the lightest in the category after just missing out on the U66kg category by 0.1 of a kilo. Well done to all!


British Schools Medallists 2010

Welcome John Devlin, (17th Mar) – The club would like to take this opportunity to welcome John Devlin to the club – John has great judo experience and is a very experienced Northern Area referee. The club intend to harness John’s knowledge and skills to continue the positive judo development work within the club – Welcome aboard John

GBR European Cadet Trials, Kendal, 13th Mar – The club had one member at this prestigious event, namely Dominique McEwan, who fought extremely well winning three of her five fights but was unsuccessful on the day. The good news for Dominique was that she has been invited to join with the England Cadet squad. Well-done Dominique from everyone in the club!

Women’s Only Session, 12th Mar – The club would like to announce it will be running a women’s only judo session from Wednesday 17th March, starting at 6.00pm until 7.00pm. The session has been organised by Holly Laws as part of the sport relief project of inclusion for all. The sessions will be free and will run for a 10 week period – Well done Holly! (A chip of the old block!)

Sport Newcastle's Rising Star Award, 8th March, (Newcastle) – The club attended this prestigious event with dignitaries and local celebrities in attendance (Shearer was there – AKA God) as a celebration of Sport within the Newcastle area. Congratulations go to our very own Nico Guiliani who received a rising star recognition award for his achievements in 2009. Nico is great young man whom we are very proud of (as are his parents) and he thoroughly deserves his night in the spotlight – Well done Nico from everyone in the club.

Goole U12’s, U16’s and U19’s Open Championships (7th March) – The club took a number of the members to this good quality event and returned with 11 gold’s, 5 silvers and four bronze medals. Congratulations got to the following members on taking gold: George, Connor, Jack, Michael, Lee, Rhys, Molly, Katy, Holly T, Jasmyne and Darren May (First event back after injury in October). Also well done to the silver medallists: Jade, Courtney, Sam, Stephen T and Brandon, while the other medallists were Daniel L, Dillon, Lewis and Jessica. A special mention goes to Stephanie Rodden who just missed out on a medal after winning three of her fights. Well done all!!

English Open, Kendal, (6th & 7th March) – the club attended this selection event with five members representing the club. Congratulations go to Jordan, Megan and Nico on taking national bronze podium places. Commiserations go to Lee and Holly whom both put up great fights but just missed out.

New Link Up – 24th Feb – The club would like to announce its latest development with the starting of an after school judo club at Bridgewater Primary School, Benwell. The club will be supplying a qualified coach for the school, for this Awards for All backed initiative and will strive to give opportunities to those pupils that attend to develop their judo by giving them further opportunities by inviting them into the club structure.

North West Aged Banded 20th / 21st Feb, (St Helens) – The club attended this identification and very competitive event and returned with a very respectable 5 gold’s, 3 silvers and 2 bronze plus 2 fifth places. Congratulations go to: Courtney, Molly, Holly T, James and Megan on taking gold. Also congrats to: Connor, Daniel and Jordan on their silvers while Nico and Dominique took the bronze. Added to this Lee and Holly L took very credible fifth places. A special mention goes to Katy Seymour who was very unlucky to lose out to a controversial refereeing decision when she was performing excellently. Well done to those that just missed out on podium places – your time will come!!

Arron Hunter, 21st Feb - Big congratulations go to our very own Arron Hunter who successfully completed his level two coaching award. Arron has become part of the fixture and fittings of the club and has become a vitality important member of the coaching staff whom we have great hopes for as a coach for the future – well done Arron!

Cumbrian Cup, Carlisle (7th Feb) – The club were invited to attend this invitational event and supplied two teams of seniors for this seven team event. We had the great honour in winning the team trophy and also placing third with a bronze. Congratulations go to the following team members on taking the gold: Tom, Nico, Steve W, Nigel and Steve L. Also well done to Patrick, Mark, Jeff, Adam and Matthew on taking the bronze with a slight weight disadvantage see pic below – Well done to all that took part.

Newcastle v Cardiff City (5th Feb) - Big thanks to the Newcastle Active team for the 20 tickets given to the members to attend this game and were rewarded with a 5 - 1 victory to the Toon. We now believe we are lucky omens and believe we should have 20 tickets every game until the Championship crown is assured - Hope you are reading this the Newcastle Active  team!

Midland Open, Walsall, Birmingham (30th/31st Jan) – The club attended this high quality identification and ranking event and returned with 4 gold’s, a silver and 4 bronze podium places. A big well done to Courtney, Holly Telfer, Megan and Jordan on their gold medals, the silver medal taker was Nico, whom the coach’s thought put in one of his best performances and the bronze medal takers were Stephanie, James, Connor and Dominique. Well done to all those that just missed out on the medals places, the performances over the weekend were very encouraging!

North West Senior Open, St Helens, (24th Jan) – The club took part in this high quality senior event and returned with highly respectable 2 gold’s and a bronze. Congratulations to Ben Irving and Steve Lowes on taking gold while Lee Storey took the bronze. Also well done to Andy Cheshire and Steve Welsh on competing really well in the event although just missing out on a medal. Also it was great to catch up with our friends from Madeira, namely: Ricardo Bastos, Carlos Pereira, Jose Teles, Andrei Veste and Joao Saldanha who also competed in the event and performed really well with Andrei taking a well deserved silver

First Medal of the Year, (23rd Jan) – Congratulations go to A. Snowman who took the club’s first medal of the year with a stand out performance beating all comers in the Newcastle area to take gold. He entered the Active Newcastle Winter Championships and took first prize for high originality and being part of a fantastic team. All joking aside, the members of the club took part in this build a snowman event (see pic) and deservedly took first place with the prize of 20 match tickets for the forthcoming match against Cardiff City. Big thanks to the Active Newcastle team for putting on the event. Unfortunately, A. Snowman looks like he will be a seasonal player, as he just melted away at the end of the session.

Congratulations Clement (22nd Jan) - The club would like to send our congratulations to one of our friends in France. Clement Rosset, who trained with the club for a year while studying at Northumbria University, has been elected as his club’s President (ESSM Judo Club) – A big well done from all the club members and looking forward to meeting up again soon!

Big Welcome to our friends from Madeira (22nd Jan) – The club would like to welcome back to the country Carlos Pereira and friends who will be taking part the North West senior event at St Helens, Lancashire. The club will be taking part in an exchange in the near future with a training week and a national team event in which two of Newburn’s members will be representing Navel Do Funchal, namely Lee Storey and Steve Welsh
