Even at the age of 73 Sir Bobby Robson proved he can still put up a fight. The former Newcastle United manager was at Newburn Leisure Centre in Newcastle to launch the city's Year of Exercise and Sport (YES) Campaign. But during the official ceremony, Sir Bobby was so impressed by the judo demonstrations, he took off his shoes and got stuck in. Newburn Judo Club coach Chloe Cowen, 32, of Crawcrook, Gateshead, said: "Sir Bobby was there for the launch of YES and we were doing some judo demonstrations. "He was mesmerised by the movements and balance the youngsters had and said he'd never be able to do anything like that." But the ex-England boss, never afraid of a challenge, took off his shoes and went on to the mat. Brown belt Nicola Steele, 14, of Denton Burn, Newcastle, was chosen to be his guinea pig. "I showed him where to hold," Chloe explained, "and how to step up to do the movement. "He was a real natural." Walbottle Campus pupil Nicola, a member of the British Judo squad, said: "I was really pleased to have been picked to be thrown by Sir Bobby, it's not every day something like that happens to you. "It was fantastic and I still can't really believe it."
Newburn into the Schools
Schools across the country have been told to make their sports lessons more exciting. Pupils from Newcastle's Throckley Middle School have started judo classes in school to test the idea of putting the sport on to the school curriculum. Newburn Judo Club coach Joe Laws and Commonwealth champion Chloe Cowen have put the children, aged 10 to 13, through a six week programme. Students at All Saints College, in West Denton, are also taking part in the pilot scheme which may soon be spread across the city. Each group of children go through a basic training course to learn the key disciplines, the sport's history and the benefits it can bring.
Their practical lessons start with basic skills of body movement, breaking another's balance, falling safely and throwing. Mr Laws said: "There are always very active kids in every school who are excellent at any sport they try. "One of the best things about the judo programme is that the children who are very shy and who are never going to make it into the football team can really come into their own.
"There is now pressure on schools to bring in people from the community to spice things up." The programme is part-funded by the British Judo Association, which aims to extend the project to 10% of the region's schools, including children as young as five. They hope it will boost interest in the sport. A spokeswoman for Newcastle City Council said: "We want to give all pupils the chance to experience a wide range of sports activities, including those not normally offered through the national curriculum."
The project aims to put as many children as possible in touch with judo. When Joe's initiative started in September, it was one of the first programmes in the country
